By Kate Collins Two days after Christmas, Kate Collins was going into the city to see the Rockefeller Christmas Tree. Collins was going to the tree with all of her summer friends.
The group of friends planned to meet at around 12 p.m. at the tree. When Collins saw her friends she was so ecstatic. They all hugged and said their hellos. The group took some pictures and then they went to go get lunch. Collins and her friends walked a few blocks away from the tree and and went into Shake Shack. They ordered burgers, fries and milkshakes. While eating, the friends talked nonstop so they could catch up with each other. It was a warm day in the city, so the friends did not mind being outside. They decided to walk to Bryant Park and spend their remaining time they had together in the park. They could smell the hot chocolate booth and they all knew they needed to try some. They all got hot chocolate and sat down at tables for about two hours. Two hours had quickly passed and it time for everyone to go back home. Much to their dismay, they had to say goodbye to each other. Everyone hugged and went on their way back home. Collins and her friends had a great day together. They had great weather and great food and were so happy to be with each other. This was a big deal for Collins because every summer she goes to a lake in New Jersey. Most of friends live far and they don’t get to see each other during the school year. Some friends came from New Jersey, some from New Hampshire, some from Delaware and some from Long Island. This was the first year they got to see each other during the school year and they hope to continue this tradition.

By Kaitlyn Check '18 On Friday Dec. 23, 2016, Arianna Trapani held a Christmas Brunch at her house at noon. The event was highly anticipated.
The brunch was planned for over a month. At the brunch there was enough food to feed an army but only enough to feed 10 girls was really needed. There was pancakes, waffles, eggs, bacon, donuts, bagels, and cookies. “I’ve never seen so much food for 10 girls, I left that house 20 pounds heavier than I came,” stated Lauren Lezamiz who was also in attendance. At the brunch, there was Christmas music blasting throughout the house. The girls could not get enough of “Jingle Bell Rock,” a fan favorite. There were Christmas themed games to play. There was Heads Up with Christmas objects as the items and people, a Christmas obstacle course, and even a cookie decorating contest. There was paper props for pictures. There was Santa hats, reindeer ears and elf hats. The props made for great pictures. According to the girls, this brunch was a great way to get into the Christmas spirit. “Every year now that I am getting older feels less and less like Christmas but the brunch was a great way to get excited for Christmas” said Olivia Cusumano. Trapani was definitely the most into the brunch. She dressed up her dogs. One was dressed up as Santa and the other as a little elf. The dogs got into the party as well. One stole a doughnut when nobody was looking. The girls all had so much fun and were so happy they planned this. It was fully agreed upon that they were going to do this again next year, but even bigger and better. By Angela Mancuso On Monday, Nov. 30, 2016 the Wednesday Fontbonne students had returned from break all had received a survey from me inquiring who went shopping the night of Thanksgiving, during the day or did not go black Friday shopping at all.
234 students had answered my survey out of around the 400 who attend Fontbonne. 162 students, 63.9%, of the Fontbonne community did not go shopping with their families and friends. These students chose to stay home and relax during this chaotic time. One student had replied to my survey with an extended response stating, “‘I did not go shopping during black Friday because to me it is the worst time of the year to go, even though there might be great sales it is not that important. I rather stay home with my family and friends, finish celebrating the beautiful holiday with them and then relax the next day.” 59 students, 25.3% of the students chose to go shopping during the day. These students think it is the best time of the year to go to get the great deals on expensive items. I had questioned two students who had replied to my survey. Q. Do you usually go shopping on Black Friday? A.”No, I do not usually go shopping. This year my mom, sister and I decided to take a ride to the mall to see what kind of sale being offered. When we got there I was able to get a lot of clothes because of how good the sales were. We were in shock” replied student number one. A.”Yes, I go every year with my sister and cousins, we love it!” replied student number two. 5.3%, 12 students had gone shopping the night of Thanksgiving. People usually leave their house around 11:00 p.m. getting to the mall or shopping centers for around midnight. One student had emailed me with a response explaining where she went and with who. “I went Black Friday shopping the night of Thanksgiving with my two cousins. We went to Kohl's and Best Buy to buy clothing and a computer.” Black Friday shopping always takes place the day after Thanksgiving which is Nov.25. It is noted to be the first day of traditional Christmas shopping. Crowds of people are drawn by the sales and special offers from retailers. By Gabriella Carone '18 On Nov. 24, 2016, the 90th annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade took place. People from across the world traveled to New York City on Thanksgiving Day to witness the parade. The most popular floats were Santa’s Sleigh, Mount Rushmore’s American Pride, and The Colonel’s Road Trip to NYC. Live performances by Sarah McLachlan, Grace Vanderwal, Maddie and Tae, Kelsea Ballerini, and Aloe Blacc.
The parade started on the corner of 77th Street and Central Park West. It made it’s way to Macy’s in Herald Square. Many walked with the parade, while some glanced outside of buildings to get an over-the-top view. It included floats, live performances, marching bands, three different types of balloons, and clowns. “I enjoy watching the parade from my office. The balloons sometimes pop-up right in front of my window. It’s pretty amazing,” said Kyle March, a lawyer in a building that is central of the parade. The famous balloons take over the skies of New York City with their enormous size. “I believe the only way to get the full experience of the parade is to wake up very early and get the best seats in the house. Watching it up close is a magical feeling,” said Christie Adams who goes to the parade every year. The floats featured were Christmas themed. “This was our first year at the parade and we absolutely loved it. My favorite thing was probably the Spongebob float, it was one of the coolest things I have ever seen,” said Toni Carone, who traveled from Virginia. This parade has been going on for decades and Macy’s promises to put on a better show each and every year. |
