Dead to Me (series) Dead to Me is a dark comedy television series that recently premiered on Netflix. This series is about Jen who recently lost her husband due to a hit and run and a kind-hearted woman named Judy whom she meets in a grief support group. As powerful as their friendship seems, Judy is hiding a shocking secret that can threaten the fate of their friendship and both of their lives. My opinion: Dead to Me is personally one of my favorite Netflix originals yet. The writing always kept me at the edge of my seat with the many different plot twists the show contains. The two leads, Christina Applegate and Linda Cardellini, did an amazing job portraying their characters perfectly and leaving viewers invested in the show. Both the acting and writing completely had me attached to this show. Wine Country (film) Wine Country is a comedy film that recently came out on Netflix. It is directed by Amy Poehler, who also plays the main character in the film. Abby, who is played by Poehler, decides to celebrate her friend Rebecca’s 50th birthday with a weekend getaway - even though Rebecca asked for a smaller celebration. Headed to this weekend getaway in Napa was Abby, Rebecca, and four of their other friends who have all met from being young waitresses at a pizza shop back in the day. This trip unravels many secrets the members of this friend group have been keeping from each other, leading these six women to question their friendships and futures. My opinion: If you are looking for a light-hearted comedy to watch with guaranteed laughs, then this is definitely the movie for you. The humor and characters included in this movie made sure I never got bored while watching it. All the characters delivered their lines perfectly with the intent to make the viewers laugh - which they were very successful in doing. Any movie with both Tina Fey and Amy Poehler is guaranteed to make me laugh. Extremely Wicked Shockingly Evil and Vile (film) Extremely Wicked Shockingly Evil and Vile is a crime thriller film, telling the story of Ted Bundy from the perspective of his girlfriend Elizabeth Kendall. Liz and Ted meet a bar where he instantly charmed her and later on became a huge part of her and her daughter Molly’s life. We see her denying the fact that he is a rapist and murderer because of the love she has for him. Theodore Bundy goes through many trials where he is accused of raping and murdering multiple different young women. Liz tries to support Ted through many of these trials, but at one point beings to lose hope and doesn’t know what to believe about him anymore. My opinion: This movie was brilliantly executed and shows the charm and charisma Bundy had that made it so easy for young girls to fall prey to him. I believe it was brilliantly casted with Zac Efron playing Bundy. Efron captures both the charisma that Bundy had on the outside and the damaged man underneath it all perfectly. He provides an excellent performance that keeps you on your toes wanting to see what he’s up to next. Mikayla’s Picks: The Society (series) The Society follows a group of high school students who, instead of being taken to the Smokey Mountains like they were expecting, find themselves in an exact replica of their small Connecticut town. But when they go to their homes, the teenagers realize all of their parents, siblings, and even their pets are nowhere to be found. The teens are cut off from the rest of the world. The kids must figure out how to survive on their own or if they'll destroy each other before they can figure out how. My opinion: I wasn’t sure about this show when I first saw the advertisements and trailers online, but I am really glad I watched it. This show tackles so many issues while also sticking to a narrative and developing character arcs. There is so much representation from so many different communities. I felt like the characters were relatable yet complex. There are also a lot of crazy plot twists that shocked me as I watched it. It is a little violent but only when it is necessary to the plot, and it really leaves an impression on viewers. The Society really played with my emotions and at some points angered me, but that was because I had grown to love the characters who are put into a bunch of crazy situations. I definitely recommend this show to any teen who needs a new show to binge watch. Lucifer (series) Lucifer is based on the DC Comics character created by Neil Gaiman, Sam Kieth, and Mike Dringenberg taken from the comic book series The Sandman. The series is produced by Jerry Bruckheimer Television, DC Entertainment and Warner Bros. Television. The series revolves around Lucifer Morningstar (Tom Ellis), the Devil, who abandons Hell for Los Angeles where he runs his own nightclub and becomes a consultant to the LAPD. The show was canceled by Fox in 2018 but it was picked up by Netflix. The fourth season is now available for streaming after being released in the beginning of May. No one believes Lucifer is actually the devil but he is. The show introduces a new outlook on our world and evil. Lucifer may be the devil but he is a lovable person who has a charming personality and is also a good person, which creates a dilemma for viewers. My opinion: Lucifer is my favorite show. I know a lot of people may think it is an inaccurate depiction of Lucifer in the Bible, or that it is offensive for one reason or another, but it really isn’t. This show has so many layers and good qualities that make it what it is. It focuses a lot on the detective work Lucifer does and the relationships he has built on earth. The detective aspect is very enjoyable even when we see Lucifer struggle with who he is as a person. I appreciate being able to look at an aspect of the Bible in a different and fun way. Lucifer takes the ultimate villain in our world and makes you love him like a friend. We as the audience want lucifer to make the right choices and to be happy despite his reputation and past. The show is also a sort of love story. Lucifer accidently becomes a consultant for the LAPD and is partners with Chloe Decker, a headstrong detective who doesn’t believe in the devil. Lucifer is funny and entertaining and makes a lot of people happy. It is nice to see a new type of show that gives viewers a different perspective. A lot of girls in our school love this show and it’s nice to see how it can connect people. Criminal minds (series) Criminal Minds is a crime drama television series created and produced by Jeff Davis. It tells the story of a group of behavioral profilers who work for the FBI as members of its Behavioral Analysis Unit. The team focuses on profiling criminals and piecing together crimes. The show follows the team as they work various cases and tackle their personal struggles. It has been running since 2005. My opinion: Criminal minds is a great show that really makes you think. I like seeing the process behind the FBI even if it is sometimes sad or scary. The characters are all interesting and complex. You will become attached to them and feel connected to them as the seasons go on. I know I did. Whenever you are bored, watch Criminal Minds. It will keep you entertained, that's for sure.
