By Nicolette Torani '19 Fontbonne’s Varsity Basketball Team had a blast during their Christmas Break in 2017. While everyone was spending their break in the snow and cold weather, the girls on varsity spent their vacation playing basketball in the sunny state of Florida.
The girls were interested in going to KSA Events Holiday Basketball Tournament in Orlando, Florida. They really wanted to go, but they had to raise money to go to the tournament. The team wasn’t going to let anything stop them. The girls sold 50/50 raffle tickets for $50 each. They sold a total of $2,000. The person that won the raffle would receive $1,000. Because of this, the team was now able to go to Florida and play in the tournament. The team left on December 27th and stayed at the Coronado Springs in Disney Resort. Every day, the girls had one game. Overall, the girls did very well. They won 2 out of the 3 games and came home to Brooklyn proud. Isabella Chirico, a member of the Fontbonne Varsity Basketball Team, said, “The experience overall was so much and it was a chance for the whole team to bond more than ever before.” Yes, the girls did have a game every day, but they had fun off the court too. Depending on how the weather was, they either went to Magic Kingdom, Epcot, or the pool. However, the last night was the best night. The girls went to Magic Kingdom at 1 a.m. and they had such an amazing time. They not only played as a team, but they also shared many memories together that trip. The girls left Florida on December 31th and had to say goodbye to Disney. The girls didn’t want to leave, but they knew it was time to head back home to Brooklyn. The tournament is certainly a trip that won’t be forgotten. By Sydney Carmosino '21 Basketball tryouts were a great experience. There were 20 girls who tried out. Ten got cut.
One junior varsity player, Isabella Chirico, was asked to move up to the varsity team. Chloe Murphy made varsity as a freshmen. By Sydney Carmosino '21 The Cross Country Track season went great. They had two races, both have gone very well. The second freshmen race was successful.
Caroline Gifford took first, Sydney Carmosino took sixth, Irina DiCunto took ninth, and Leslie Alhakim took tenth. The varsity team did well. The indoor season will begin soon. It is short distances. Coach Tutone works hard to make the best team and individual runners possible. By Kayla Rolon '21 My first softball experience in Fontbonne was surprising because I didn't know what I was doing. Everyone around me seemed like they knew what they were doing and had been there before or they were already in the school and they had known each other but I didn't.
I just knew the girls that I had come with to the practice. We began to stretch and throw, but it was brand new. One thing I did notice when I had walked in was even though they didn't know us they were still friendly and open into meeting new people. The team welcomed me and made me feel more comfortable. Throughout that day, I had noticed a lot of things actually about my future teammates and coaches. They had everything. They were put together and organized. All the girls that came with me were also glad about how it looked and how the people were extremely welcoming and they were happy to help us. I'm grateful for them because they allowed me to be comfortable in my environment and practice. By Nicolette Torani '19 After Fontbonne Hall Academy held their Walkathon on Oct. 6, 2017, Lifestream hosted a faculty versus student volleyball game for all to attend. Ms. Danielle Bittleman, the leader of Lifestream, organized the event along with student members of the club.
Lifestream sent out a form to the school to buy a $10 shirt that supported this event. The club sold baked goods, pink lemonade, and breast cancer awareness products in the courtyard before the game started at 11:30 a.m. in the gym. Ms. Bittleman said, “"Lifestream was pleased to host the Faculty-student volleyball game, as it served as a fun way to raise money for such a wonderful cause. I hope this event can be a Fontbonne tradition, and that the faculty will get a chance at redemption next year!" Ms. Bittleman held this exciting event to benefit an organization called the Breast Cancer Alliance. The organization improves survival rates and the quality of life for those that are impacted by breast cancer through better prevention, early detection, and treatment and cure. Lifestream raised a total of $600 that was donated towards the Breast Cancer Alliance. The faculty and students played two games. The students won both of them by a landslide. By Arianna Trapani '18 On Thursday, April 27, Fontbonne Hall Academy’s softball team gathered together and painted softballs for Autism Awareness.
Both varsity and junior varsity attended this event to decorate the balls. The get-together took place in the back room of Bklyn’s Pizza, located on 86th Street and 15th Avenue. The girls painted the balls for their upcoming tournament which will be held on Saturday, April 29. On the balls the girls could have painted anything they want, from a solid colored ball to a tie-dyed ball. These softballs will be given to the other attending teams that participate as a thank you. “This day is a great bonding experience for us girls,” senior, Natalie Lacognata said. “We learn to work together, play for fun, and raise money for a great cause all at the same time”. At this tournament the team raises money for Autism. There are a total of 16 teams who will be joining the Fontbonne Softball team to raise money for the cause. Girls donate gifts that will be raffled off and even make baked goods to be sold. This is just one of the many times this team has hosted this tournament. It is a fun day for the girls and an amazing team bonding experience. By Luciana Spata '18 The cheerleaders at Fontbonne Hall Academy have been preparing for their competition on March 18, 2017, for months. With the competition slowly approaching it is crunch time. They have been putting hard work day in and day out in the school gym since September. The cheerleaders have support and help from their coaches, who will not accept anything less than first place.
The girls on the cheer have been balancing school, sports night and cheerleading practice during the months of February and March. They have the drive and determination to get through practices. The coaches put their all into the girls and want them to succeed. Their varsity team who started out with 29 girls now have 21, they have faced so many challenges this season. They started out the year with elevators and they have gradually gotten their stunts up to tik-ups and rewinds. The cheerleaders grew as a team physically and mentally. “ I am proud of these girls and all the time they dedicate to this sport,” said Maryjean Tomasino the coach of the Fontbonne Varsity Cheer Team, “ we all put in so much work, I know will be champions on March 18.” Fontbonne Varsity Cheerleading hopes to bring back that first place trophy, and be known as “Brooklyn’s Best” again. Win or lose these girls have love and dedication for this sport that does not go unnoticed. The cheerleaders believe their hard work can make them champions. They have overcome so much and stood strong through it all. By Sabrina Gheller '18 On March 6, 2017, Fontbonne Hall Academy held the first of two tryouts for the new lacrosse team. Excitement sparked across campus grew as more and more students asked their friends if they would be trying out.
Mr. Petric, the athletic director at the all-girls high school, sent out a school wide email regarding the new team. The first day of tryouts was two hours long, running from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Prospective lacrosse players met at Shore Road Park with Mr. Petric and Coach Ralph. “We are ready to make lacrosse the “new thing” to be part of at FHA,” said Mr. Petric in the email. The season runs from March 25, 2017 to May 12, 2017. Mr. Petric also informed girls in an email that practices would be three to four times a week after school and maybe on the weekend. All home games are at Aviator Sports and Events Center and away games are on Randall’s Island. Fontbonne Hall Academy is renowned for it's exceptional softball, soccer, and cheerleading teams, but this is the first time the school will have a lacrosse team. Nadia Henneman, a junior at Fontbonne Hall Academy, attended the tryouts on Monday. “At tryouts we did a lot of things like running drills, wall ball, cradling, and catching and throwing with a partner,” said Henneman, “The turnout was great. There were around 20 girls. More would’ve shown up, but they had Sports Night practice so they couldn’t make it.” For any girls interested, the second day of tryouts will be on Wednesday, March 8. |
