On March 28th, after an absolutely thrilling season, Fontbonne’s JV Softball team became the first to win a championship for the school against Molloy high school. “The game was expected to be exciting,” says Brianna Alicandro, 11th grade pitcher, “but also challenging due to the fact that Molloy won the championship last year.” However, Fontbonne’s players did not let this stop them. When they got to the field that Tuesday, they immediately focused and began their warmups as usual.
Fontbonne was able to take advantage of being the first team to score early on, but all in all, the game was definitely a close one in the first few innings. As the game approached the 6th inning, Fontbonne was winning 4-3 and all they needed was 3 more outs. Eventually, Molloy tied the score, making it a close 4-4.
However, after the 8th inning, both teams were told that they needed to stop the game to make way for another local team that needed to utilize the field. Evidently, both teams were upset that they could not finish the game, but Fontbonne came back the next day ready to take the win. “As we played on Wednesday, we didn’t know if we would travel over an hour for an inning, two inning or three inning continuation of the game, but we were excited,” stated Brianna.
Fontbonne’s first batter up was Valentina Campanella who bunted perfectly to move previous batter Marianna to third base. Julianna DeLuca hit a hard ground ball up the middle to score Marianna, which allowed Fontbonne to take the flawless win.
At the end of the game all of the players joyously ran outside of the dugout cheering. This win, while also a great personal victory, named them the well deserved City Champions. The players on the team worked hard during their long practices in order to secure the win, but they also bonded, shared laughs, and played as a family. They hope to keep up their hard work in the coming year and are excited to see what the future will bring for the whole team.
