On March 1, 2016, Fontbonne students, faculty, and administration began their day with a two hour assembly for the KIND campaign.
The KIND campaign is an organization founded by two women, Lauren Parsekian and Molly Mae Thompson. This organization is about the bullying between girl to girl and how women can overcome this negativity and bring more positivity. The founders of the KIND campaign made a documentary that showed them on a road trip spreading positivity and kindness.
When the documentary ended, the students and faculty participated in activities. They were given three colored cards. The first card that was given was to write down a pledge to be kind to others. The second card was to write down an apology letter. The third and final card was to write a letter to someone thanking them. The letters included heartfelt messages to others. Dozens of students went up and revealed their third card. Every single person in the auditorium was touched by all the positivity that was being spread in the gym.
Anette Tikkop, junior, said,” I liked the KIND campaign because it spreaded awareness on the negative effect of bullying and demonstrated how important it is to stand up for one another and spread positivity.”
When the assembly was over, students and faculty were non stop talking about the KIND campaign.
This campaign was introduced by Chemistry teacher, Ms. Scherpf.

(SPOTLIGHT ON: Eleni Misetzis)
In Brooklyn, window painting or window splash is a very popular thing to see on stores, restaurants, and supermarkets. These window paintings help these businesses “shine.” Eleni Misetzis is one of the fantastic window painters in Brooklyn. She paints and designs windows all over Brooklyn. Some of the businesses she painted for were Nature's Grill, Food Dynasty, and Bagels Plus. For the past three years, Eleni has been window painting.
Misetzisi is a Fontbonne graduate from the class of ‘04. She was in AP Art with Mr. B. While in Fontbonne, she loved English class and her favorite teacher was Ms. Ryan. She said, “I loved English because I loved to read.”
While growing up, Misetzis felt misunderstood and needed to find her place. She used art and painting as an outlet and her escape from everything. “My life was chaotic and unorganized. Painting was the only thing I had control over,” she said. Misetzis attended St. Francis College and graduated from the School of Visual Arts.
Misetzis started painting windows as a business after she painted the window of her aunt’s business, Aeronautics Driving School. Upon finishing, she loved how the store and block looked. While painting for her favorite holiday, she listens to Christmas music or the Johnny Mathis Pandora station. One of her goals is to paint the whole neighborhood. She is right on target and booked for all of November and December.
One of the consequences for window painting is working outside in the dark. She said, “It’s freezing out, but I work artistically better at night.” For one of display, it took her two days to paint. Misetzis also owns a craft business. Joking, she said she believes she’s in elf since she loves Christmas. In her craft business, she makes Christmas ornaments.
Misetzis is a creator and has always been one. Mr B. has changed her life and wants to do the same for others. She wants to teach art and would love to teach at Fontbonne! She wants artists to believe in themselves and their work. She said, “You’re an artists and that is your job.”
When asked for advice for other artists she replied, “Don’t let people determine your value.” Eleni hopes that her paintings will inspire others to hone their craft.
Fontbonne wants to welcome Ms. Jennifer Nicastro, one of the new members of the Fontbonne family. She teaches Algebra to the freshmen and sophomores. Ms. Nicastro is the year coordinator for the class of 2019. “It’s nice because we both start together and grow together through the years” she said of being a year coordinator. When asked about her opinion on Fontbonne she said, “I love it so much." Ms. Nicastro chose teaching because she was a “people person." She wanted to interact with others while teaching something she loves. This is Ms. Nicastro’s first job. Ms. Nicastro was nervous, but excited on the first day of teaching. Ms. Nicastro comes very early to school just to help her students with math.
Ms. Nicastro is from Floral Park, Long Island. She went to Sacred Heart Academy, an all girls high school. In elementary and high school, Ms Nicastro hated math, but in college she learned to love it. She attended Providence College in Rhode Island. She started as a science major, but ended up switched to math with a business minor. She went to Hunter college for graduate school and currently attends Queens College.
Ms. Nicastro is the youngest out of 3 children and has three nephews. Ms. Nicastro’s mother and sister are teachers. Her favorite color is purple and favorite number is 3. She has a dog named Roxy. Her birthday is on August 3rd. She loves to read books on crime and mystery. Her favorite thing to do is watch crime shows on Netflix. She says "I can binge watch all day!” Her favorite shows are Law and Order:SVUand Criminal Minds. Ms. Nicastro said if she wasn’t a teacher, she would work for the FBI. Her favorite food is a bacon cheeseburger and she remarks "I love food." Her celebrity crush is Chris Pratt. She mentioned that if she wasn’t living in New York, then she would love to live in Australia. She reported that Mrs. Barton is like her “math mother." Ms. Nicastro is very excited to be at Fontbonne Hall Academy and is looking forward to making many memories with her students and faculty.
Los 33 premiered on Friday, November 13. The movie was based on the Chilean miners who were trapped in the San José Mine in the Atacama Desert on August 5, 2010. These miners were trapped 2,000 feet below the ground for 69 days. It starred, Antonio Banderas, Rodrigo Santoro, and Mario Casas. The movie received four stars.
The movie showed how the miners went through starvation and despair. All they had to share were a few cans of tuna, cookies, and filtered water. They had to split the food and divide it among 33 men. The movie demonstrated how the rock fell and the miners literally ran for their lives.
Los 33 highlighted the miner’s characteristics. Antonio Banderas who played as Mario Sepúlveda took on being the leader. He encouraged the miners to stay strong and think positive.
The families of the trapped miners arrived on site in Chile, not knowing if the miners were alive or not. The family set a camp called, “Camp Hope.” The situation sparked up media all over the world. The Chilean government wouldn’t give up. They needed to find ways in order to find out if the miners were alive. They drilled holes in the ground and Sepúlveda realized it. The miners attached a note on the drill that said that all 33 of them were alive.
As a Chilean, I loved how it explored cultural aspects. It proved that if a few Chileans are affected by a disaster, the whole country would band together to help. This eye opening movie will give people a sense of what the miners went through and how they stuck together. The movie’s portrayal of strength, leadership, and the theory on never to give up, would earn it four stars.
Was it a bird? Was it a plane? Was it Superman? It was not a superhero in the sky, it was a UFO. A UFO is an unidentified flying object that can be seen in the sky. On November 7, 2015, a UFO was spotted traveling across the dark skies of California. Many residents did not know if it was a meteor or a UFO in the sky. This blue light flying across the sky caught the eye of many people in Los Angeles. The people living in California were able to record this light and were able to post it on social media.
Eventually dozens of videos were able to capture it. It also grabbed the attention of many celebrities. Kendall Jenner tweeted, “Khloe and I are freaking out right now over this UFO situation.” Also Josh Groban tweeted, “California coast. DID. ANYONE. ELSE. JUST. SEE. THAT. #ufo”. The people of California believed that aliens were finally coming! The “aliens” definitely came right on time for the Republican debate! Once the UFO appeared in the sky, many people really started to wonder what it was exactly.
Law enforcements received calls about it. Military officials did respond and said that the Navy were doing an defenseless missile test. This test run was done by the coast of Southern California. UFOs can be seen everyday. If you see something in the sky that doesn’t look like a bird, plane, (or at least a superman) then it could be a UFO in the sky.
