The history behind the origins of doughnuts is very unclear. Archaeologists are still skeptical on where doughnuts were first created. Many people believe that the Dutch were the first ones to create the circular shaped goodness, some say it was the Native Americans.
This “fried dough” has been made all around the world, in different ways. The Dutch settlers that arrived in America were kind enough to bring apple cream pies and cookies, also doughnuts. The name doughnuts didn't originate from them. The Dutch called their doughnuts “olykoeks,” or oily cakes. In that time period, doughnuts were often stuffed with apples, prunes, and raisins.
Have you ever wondered why there is a hole in the middle of a doughnut? The name “doughnut” actually refers to the hole they put in middle of so it can cook evenly. There are many different stories as to how the doughnuts center was removed.
According to legend, it all started in the year 1857 when a woman named Elizabeth Gregory was making a doughnuts with a little nutmeg, filled with hazelnuts and walnuts. Lore says that her 16-year-old son Hanson created the doughnut hole. In 1847, Hanson’s ship hit a bad storm and he used the doughnut hole as a “ spoke.” Spokes are “a set of radial handles projecting from a ship's wheel.” This made the doughnut’s center come out and since then he’s enjoyed having a doughnut without the center.
