Although it still feels like December, the spring season is back along with Fontbonne’s Outdoor Track Team. With team meetings and preseason workouts already in session, Coach Tutone is preparing the girls for success.
This is the third official season of Fontbonne’s Outdoor Track Team, which makes the girls even more eager to train hard and improve the new sport.
Kristen Brower, senior member of the team, is passionate about making her last track season her best, “I can’t wait for the upcoming track season. Mr. Tutone is a great coach and helps me work to my greatest potential. All the girls on the team are extremely supportive too, we all push each other to be the best we can be.”
In order for the runners to reach their individual goals, the weekly practices and preseason workouts are essential. As part of the workouts, every Monday and Tuesday the team focuses on jogging, running, and sprinting for an hour after school. Practices did not start yet, however they are slightly different. Every practice begins with stretching and a half mile run to warm up. Following warm ups, each girl is assigned a certain number of laps to run based on her level of skill. These laps are timed, and the distance is taken into consideration.
Whether a runner is able to run long distances or short distances, either skill will be tested at the practices and used at the meets later on during the season.
“Spring track is a great opportunity to get into shape and build a competitive spirit all while developing a nice base tan for the summer. All you need is a pair of running shoes and the desire for self improvement,” said Coach Tutone.
For those interested in joining the team, no experience is needed and it’s not too late to register. Preseason workouts will continue until the end of Easter break and team practices will begin three times a week in April.
