By Laura Cretella '21 In our school, Fontbonne Hall Academy, the faculty, and students came together to grieve over the loss of the students who tragically died in school shootings of multiple schools. We honored their lives by tying orange ribbons to the front of our school gates. Our school chorus, led by Mr. Bailey, dedicated their heartfelt performance to the recent school shooting victims by singing the song “Rise Up” by Andra Day. It was the perfect song choice to show that us students can join together and protest gun violence in order to prevent another school shooting from happening.
School shootings have occurred over many years in America. There have been over 200 school shootings since 2012. Innocent people die in school shootings, and even if people aren’t hurt, they are still traumatized. In 2011, students went to school feeling safe, but now some students are scared to even go to school. The last thing we should be thinking about when we go to school is if we are going to walk out alive. The victims of school shootings had expected to attend school and have a normal day like the day before. Never once did the thought of being in danger ever cross their minds. The biggest issue with school shootings and why they occur so often is that the shooters have some sort of mental instability. For example, in December 2014, there was a shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary school. The man who was found to be the shooter had a form of autism. Research shows that he went insane because he stayed home alone for a weekend while the mother went on vacation. The mother was a teacher at Sandy Hook and he decided to get revenge. When the mother returned back to school to continue teaching, her son invaded and killed her and another twenty students in eleven minutes. Afterward, he committed suicide. School shootings are not necessary and should not occur. It is time that we finally realize that enough is enough and acknowledge the importance of this issue. Most shooters have a mental illness, are angry, and hold grudges against people. However, innocent students’ lives should not be threatened by this. A parent should not have to deal with the trauma of losing or potentially losing a child in a place they send them every day to and believe is safe.
